The Rice University Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
invites Rice graduate students and Postdocs to a special lunchtime event:

"An intimate conversation with Alicia Castillo, Ph.D."
Friday, July
25
Duncan Hall 1042
12:30 pm
A light lunch will be provided to the fi
rst 25 to arrive.
Dr. Castillo will discuss the findings of her new book
, From Brain to Gain, to explore how smart individuals take different pat
hways to create knowledge or to create wealth. As a former scientist turned
entrepreneur and venture capitalist, Dr. Castillo navigates through the r
eflections that guide people to measure success in a way that supports or h
alts prosperity. Brainers’ goals are based on creating knowledge and innova
tions, Gainers’ goals are based on a triple bottom line: achievement, use
and payback. The main distinctions between Gainers and Brainers reside in
the questions they ask more than the answers they create regarding three cr
itical areas: control, interaction and rewards. For more information about
Dr. Castillo, visit her website at: http://www.wealthing.com/

Glossy plotter outage
04/09/2008
- 04/16/2008
Over the last few years, there has been extreme demand for the
use of Rice ITs two non-glossy plotters during a very short period at the
tail end of the spring semester when Architecture students are plotting the
ir final projects.
Beginning Wednesday, April 9th, and continuing thro
ugh Tuesday, April 15th, you can anticipate long queues at the plotters i
n the Mudd building. In order to reduce this congestions, and recognizing
the low use of the one glossy plotter at this time, the plotter that norma
lly is loaded with glossy paper will have regular paper instead.
Consequ
ently, if you want a glossy plot or don't want to get stuck in a long queu
e, do your work quickly before Architecture's "crunch week" begins. If thi
s is not possible, please consult IT Help Desk staff for other options, i
ncluding the Digital Media Center’s plotter and commercial printing (Kinko'

Sonia Nazario - President's Lecture Series of Diverse Scholars
03/14/2008 1:00am UTC
- 03/14/2008 2:30am UTC
President’s Lecture Series of Diverse Scholars
As journa
list Sonia Nazario clung to the top of a freight train dubbed “the train of
death” with a young Honduran boy named Enrique, she had little time to co
nsider changing the world or winning prizes. Her chronicle of Enrique’s bra
ve odyssey to reunite with his mother in the United States, first recounte
d in a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper series, later in her book “Enrique
’s Journey” and now in an upcoming movie for HBO, is a gripping personal p
erspective on one of today’s most challenging and divisive issues: immigrat
ion.
In sharing the epic journey that thousands of immigrant children ma
ke each year to find their mothers in the United States, Nazario explores
the perils modern day immigrants face. With a reporter’s eye on the truth,
she humanizes the issue, posing new perspectives that fall on both sides
, while offering ways to change the national dialogue on the influx of immi
grants and the effects they have on the state of the nation.
A projects
reporter for The Los Angeles Times, Nazario has spent more than two decade
s reporting and writing about social issues and garnering dozens of awards
, including the George Polk Award for International Reporting and the Grand
Prize of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards. Tackling hot-button issu
es such as hunger, drug addiction and immigration, she combines sensitivi
ty with a sensible viewpoint on the subject matter.

President's Lecture - William H. Calvin
11/30/2007 2:00am UTC

How to Treat Global Fever: An Intelligence Test for Our Times
A theoretical neurobiologist and affiliate professor of psychiatry and
behavioral sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, William H.
Calvin studies ape-to-human evolution, climate change and civilization’s
vulnerabilities to abrupt shocks. His research interests include the homini
d brain’s four-fold enlargement during the Ice Ages and the brain’s cogniti
ve reorganization during the mind’s “Big Bang,” which occurred about 50,0
00 years ago.
How to Treat Global FeverDuring his talk, Calvin will exa
mine the causes of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and appraise the
conventional methods humans are considering to help reverse the trend, su
ch as conservation, reduced emissions and clean energy sources. He then wi
ll examine alternate means he believes are necessary to restore the balance
between carbon emissions and consumption, including the development of wa
ter-based carbon “sinks” to replace lost carbon-consuming forests.
Calvi
n is the author of a dozen books, most for general readers, about brains
and evolution, including “A Brief History of the Mind: From Apes to Intell
ect and Beyond” and “A Brain for All Seasons: Human Evolution and Abrupt Cl
imate Change,” which won the 2002 Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science. His boo
k with Derek Bickerton, “Lingua ex Machina: Reconciling Darwin and Chomsky
with the Human Brain,” traces the evolution of structured language. His n
ext book, “Global Fever: How to Treat Climate Change,” will be out this c
oming February.
