Professor Carl Caldwell
I’ve been at Rice since 1994, as a professor for modern European history in the Department of History. Over the years, I’ve taught lots of grad courses to graduate students from at least five different departments across campus. I’ve also served as chair of my department (where I introduced our graduate pedagogy seminar, around ten years ago), dgs, and most recently speaker of the Faculty Senate. My own research is on aspects of the modern state, with a focus on Germany: democracy and constitutionalism, state planning and the disciplines, romantic notions of revolution, and most recently the never-ending crisis of the welfare state. I look forward to working with the GSA this year!
